Flipped Classroom

What is a flipped classroom?

A flipped a classroom is the opposite of a traditional classroom. In a traditional classroom, the learning environment is followed by “ I do , We do, and You do” meanwhile in a flipped classroom students learn by “You do, We do, and I do.” Students are being held accountable for their learning. Learning for students is not limited inside the classroom rather students learn outside of the classroom. This strategy provides an active learning experience for the students as well. I can visualize a flipped classroom because in my teaching reading class we were assigned questions and needed to be prepared on the topic . I really liked it because there were videos along with it which I could take notes and jot down questions that I needed to ask the instructor.

What are the benefits and downside of it?

Since the students are being held accountable for their learning, students would be more prepared with small group or classroom discussion. This also creates additional time for the teachers to discuss with each student, and assess on their learning Students can work on their own pace. When students get to their home to learn about the topic, parents would see the opportunity to help their son or daughter’s learning. The downside of a flipped classroom is that students are required to have access to internet and technology to able learn about a certain topic. Of course, there are going to be students who would be unmotivated or overwhelmed resulting less students participating in discussions. If you are thinking about teaching in a flipped classroom, teachers need to input a great effort in preparing for it.

In the future…

If I were to teach in a flipped classroom in elementary, I would implement this strategy throughout each subject. However, I would modify to where my younger students wouldn’t feel overwhelmed by it. I would give a few questions that students need to look for in order to be prepared for the lesson. In addition, I would include a couple of apps that can facilitate and organize a flipped classroom learning environment

Google Classroom:

With this app, I could use it for my 3rd-6th grade students. They would be able to access videos, assignments, and files. Teachers can personalize individual's learning which teachers can let only certain student to access that personalized lesson or assignments.
